Community Outreach

The students, faculty, and staff at Samuel Merritt University (SMU) are committed to serving their local communities. Our students and faculty regularly provide free healthcare through volunteering at local churches, hosting free public health clinics, and offering mentorship programs to young residents. We are proud to serve our neighbors in the Oakland, Sacramento and San Mateo areas.

Recent events/programs include:

The Community Learning Forum (CLF) at Allen Temple Baptist Church in Oakland

The Community Learning Forum (CLF) is a series of health education seminars intended to enhance public awareness of primary health matters in the local community. The CLF is a partnership between the Allen Temple Baptist Church and Samuel Merritt University. Each seminar focuses on a specific health-related topic (e.g., diabetes, osteoporosis, or cancer) and is taught by SMU faculty with expertise in these areas.

Youth in Medicine Program

The Youth in Medicine Program helps low-income, at-risk middle-school students prepare for the ninth grade. These students spend five weeks at SMU exploring the possibilities of a healthcare career. They spend a full day in the Health Sciences Simulation Center (HSSC). They talk with faculty, observe scenarios, and, under close supervision, enjoy hands-on experience with the equipment.
