Abby Heydman, PhD, RN, is Professor and Academic Vice President Emerita and former Dean for Nursing at SMU. She continues to serve the University as a consultant on special projects and as the editor of the Nu Xi At Large Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society newsletter. Abby holds a PhD from the University of California Berkeley, and a Master’s degree in Nursing from the University of Washington.

Research Interests
Her most recent scholarship and research involves a study on the transition of hospital schools of nursing to collegiate status 1985-2010, and initial findings were presented in September 2010 at the International Perspectives on the History of Nursing Conference in London, England. In 2012, Dr. Heydman, along with Dr. Nancy Haugen, received a grant from Nu Xi at Large, Sigma Theta Tau, to conduct an oral history project on the first 20 years of Nu Xi at Large Chapter.
