Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) & Attorney At Law (Esq.)

Prof. Marcia Goodman-Lavey, Esq., OTR/L is an occupational therapist and an attorney. She is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Samuel Merritt University, Oakland, CA, and has worked as a medical-legal consultant on varied projects. Prof. Goodman-Lavey is currently involved in a consulting and practitioner role in creating a unique rehabilitation program, and carries out some clinical work with geriatric clients in addition. Prof. Lavey has also been very involved in the development and management of a faith-based community program for individuals with disabilities in two counties for many years.

Her previous work has also included medical/legal work and occupational therapy practitioner roles in corporate, private, and non-profit sectors. In the educational arena, Prof. Goodman-Lavey has taught a range of courses for both occupational therapy practitioners and assistants. Prof. Goodman-Lavey’s teaching at Samuel Merritt University emphasized health policy, medical, legal, and ethical issues. These topics were also integrated in other classes taught, such as Occupational Therapy Foundations, Health Care Industry, and in Administration/Management class. In this latter class, students were also able to explore their dreams and passions in occupational therapy practice for future work, through exposure to new and emerging practices and options in our growing profession.

In recent years, Prof. Goodman-Lavey has increasingly focused on clinical occupational therapy practice, and has supervised in the adult clinic. Presently she teaches a course that addresses complementary and alternative medical (“CAM”) practices. Pursuant to future health care predictions and policies, occupational therapy intervention may play an important role in this area. The mind/body connection, holistic approaches to care, future expectations of the types of health care disease, disability, methods of prevention, and the growth of specific populations, does not only reflect the philosophical approach in our program; but are likely to create new and innovative roles for the practitioner. Students are able to create and implement personal wellness, health promotion, and prevention plans utilizing CAMs, via evidence-based approaches, to learn about their own needs and ways to manage personal healthy lifestyles, as well as for their future clients. Ethics and legal issues are integrated within the course very generally, so that students are merely aware of ways they can practice, and impact patient care with competence and compassion.

In professional organizations, Prof. Goodman-Lavey has been. involved in national and state occupational therapy associations in various positions focusing on political issues affecting our profession, such as chairing the government affairs committee for the Occupational Therapy Association of California (OTAC), and serving on the Board of Directors of the American Occupational Therapy Political Action Committee (AOTPAC). She currently is involved in an organization providing research grants for practitioners. Part of her professional commitments have included numerous speaking engagements included honored lectures, with various publications and grants in efforts to promote the profession.
