Dr. Merritt arrived in San Francisco Bay on May 5th, 1850. His arrival couldn't have been more timely and set a pattern of benevolence toward his fellow men which he followed the rest of his life. For, it was the day after the great fire which left San Francisco in ruins and the community without food and supplies. Columns of smoke were still visible as small boats made their way from the shore to Dr. Merritt's sailing vessel with news of the holocaust, and it was with great joy that Dr. Merritt shouted to the men, "Yes, we have food and supplies!"
