Process and Procedure
This report allows Samuel Merritt University to monitor and effectively respond to activity that negatively affects the campus climate. By reporting bias incidents, you are reaffirming our Principles of Community . Once received, The Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) will review the information and may contact you for additional information. ODI will protect your anonymity and confidentiality to the extent permitted by law. Dependent on the nature of your report, ODI will collaborate with designated campus leadership to develop resolutions and/or recommendations regarding the circumstances of your report.  We thank you for completing this form.

Definition of Bias Incident
Speech or action that targets, attacks or restricts the free movement of an individual, a group, or property of an individual or group because of their actual or perceived race, color, national origin, ethnicity, religious affiliation, sex, gender identity, veteran status, disability, sexual orientation, age, or any other protected personal characteristic.

Title IX Complaints
Samuel Merritt University affirms its commitment to promote the goals of fairness and equity in all aspects of the educational enterprise. The Executive Director of Human Resources, Elaine Lemay, serves as the Title IX Coordinator and oversees implementation of the University’s policy on equal opportunity, harassment and nondiscrimination. Reports of discrimination, harassment and/or retaliation should be made to the Title IX Coordinator.

Disability Complaints
If there is an unresolved disagreement over a particular accommodation or a complaint of discrimination, first contact the Director of the Disability Resource Center. If the complaint is about the Director, or the problem is not satisfactorily resolved, appeals may be made to the Assistant Vice President of Enrollment and Student Services, who makes a final determination in the matter following the dispute resolution procedures outlined in the University Catalog and Student Handbook.

Student Academic/Behavioral Complaints
Student issues concerning academic integrity, code of ethics and code of conduct behavioral matters are governed by the dispute resolution and grievance procedures outlined in the current SMU Catalog and Student Handbook, and are not governed by the BIAS process.

University Operations, Services, Condition, Facilities Complaints
A concern or issue identified by a Samuel Merritt University student, faculty, staff member or external party with respect to the operations, services, conditions or facilities of the University. Issues concerning academic or behavioral matters involving students and faculty are governed by the dispute resolution and grievance procedures outlined in the current SMU Catalog and Student Handbookand are not governed by the complaint process. Complaints concerning the personal lives of individuals connected to the University are not considered.

Student Health and Counseling
Our health professionals recognize that good health is more than the absence of illness, but rather a robust state of well-being that acknowledges the importance and inseparability of the mind-body relationship. Whether you are enrolled in the SMU sponsored Student Health Insurance plan or you maintain alternate health insurance coverage, SHAC offers a variety of free or very low cost physical and mental health services to all matriculated SMU students.

Office of the Ombuds
Ombuds is available to all students, faculty, and staff. Meetings are neutral, confidential, informal, and independent. You should contact the Ombuds:

  • When you need to talk through a challenging workplace or academic situation
  • When you are not sure which policy or procedure applies in your circumstance
  • When you feel that you have been treated unfairly by anyone in the University
  • When you are not sure whether your concerns are appropriate or reasonable (just ask)
