The start of fall classes marked the beginning of the 99th academic year at Samuel Merritt College (SMC). Though typical for the first week, students crowded advising offices to find ways to juggle class schedules and engineer attempts to enter crowded classes. According to Scot Foster, Ph.D., Academic Vice President and Provost, applications for virtually all of our academic programs are at a historic high.
"This is due largely to the reputation of SMC as a premier health sciences institution, one with a rich resource base of highly qualified faculty, staff, and technologies to aid student learning. Of course, the current economic climate provides substantial motivation for students returning to school to gain new skills and benefit from the vast employment opportunities in health care."
In this edition of eNEWS you will read about what the College is doing to welcome new faculty and a dean's vision for his doctoral program. Find out what the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) students learned during their trip to Southeast Asia, and how one faculty member is making her mark in Oakland's history. Also read about the commendable service SMC employees and students have given the East Bay and Sacramento community.
Enjoy these stories that tell how SMC is making a difference. As always, ideas or suggestions for future eNEWS articles are welcome.
Thank you.
