SMU Mourns the Loss of a Faculty Member, Dr. Patricia Harvey Webb
Samuel Merritt University has lost a beloved teacher and dear friend with the passing of Dr. Patricia "Pat" Harvey Webb on January 23. Dr. Webb served as an associate professor in the School of Nursing after beginning her career at Samuel Merritt University in 1980. The Arkansas native lived in Benicia, where she raised her three sons: David, Matt, and Scott.
"She taught nursing at the University for 30 years, becoming an integral member of the School of Nursing faculty, and central to the medical/surgical and critical care nursing courses," said Dr. Audrey Berman, Dean of the School of Nursing. "Through her life's works, and the hundreds of students she taught over the years, she made a tremendous impact that will not be forgotten."
Sharon Diaz, President and CEO of Samuel Merritt University, described Dr. Webb as a professional and extremely caring individual. "Pat was an exceptional nurse, a fine teacher and a person who cared deeply about her students and the patients for whom they cared."
Dr. Webb put great emphasis on treating patients as whole and sentient beings. In addition to critical care classes, she also taught nursing theory at the graduate level. Dr. Webb received several grants for her main research focus, Women's Knowledge of Risk Factors for Heart Disease, in both the United States and Japan. She was a member of the American Nurses Association, American Heart Association, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the Japanese Society of Nursing Research, and Sigma Theta Tau, the international nursing honor society.
"Dr. Webb was a very dedicated faculty member who cared deeply for her students and the community she served," Diaz said. "Moreover Pat was a good friend to all of us."
In addition to her work at the University, Dr. Webb was involved in many charitable and professional efforts including support of the homeless, Project Pride, Shoes That Fit, Advanced Cardiac Life Support prep course, Women's Health Issues Seminar, evaluation courses for RN Nursing Student Preceptors, elementary school classes, Cardiac Care workshops, March of Dimes, career days and Advice Nurse for Vacation Bible School. "That was just another whole aspect of Pat, her religious faith and service to the people in the community," said Dr. Berman. "She was a wonderful role model to all who knew her."
