SMC Hosts its 96th Graduation Ceremony

Ross Taubman, DPM, CCPM Alum Samuel Merritt College is getting ready for its 96th graduation ceremony.

The 2008 Commencement will take place on Friday, May 23 at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. The ceremony will begin at 10:00 am for the Doctor of Physical Therapy and Doctor of Podiatric Medicine program graduates. Ross Taubman, DPM, California College of Podiatric Medicine (CCPM) Alum and President, American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), will give the ceremony address to more than 60 graduating students.

As a graduate from CCPM 25 years ago, Dr. Taubman says his speech is centered on higher responsibility.

"The theme is about going above and beyond being a doctor, whether it's a doctor of physical therapy or podiatric medicine, taking care of patients is one thing, but I think you have to give back beyond that. So my remarks will be centered on your lifetime of service to the profession, to your family and to the community."

Anthony ItonAt 2:00 pm the theater will be filled with graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN and 2+2 programs), Master of Science in Nursing, Master of Occupational Therapy, and Master Physician Assistant programs. Anthony Iton, M.D., J.D., MPH and the Alameda County Public Health Department Director and Health Officer, will give the ceremony address.

Graduating seniors in the Samuel Merritt College – Saint Mary's College Intercollegiate Nursing program (ICNP) will have their 2008 ceremony on the Moraga campus of Saint Mary's College on Saturday, May 24th starting at 9:30am.

Emmy-winning journalist, Regent and NBC-11 morning anchor, Laura Garcia Cannon will give the ceremony address.

Every time I'm back on (Saint Mary's College) campus I'm reminded of the wonderful friendships incredible education and the personal sculpting that took place to help me become the person I am today. I hope by sharing a little bit of my journey I can help the graduates feel they can conquer anything as they make their way into world."

Samuel Merritt College graduated its first students in 1912 with a graduating size of 13.
