After majoring in English literature (and beach walking) at UCSB, I earned an associate degree in nursing at Santa Barbara City College, moved to San Francisco and worked on orthopedic, adolescent and psychiatric units. I completed a BS in nursing at California State University and an MS in nursing administration at UCSF and worked as a nursing supervisor at McAuley Neuropsychiatric Institute, St. Mary’s hospital and Children’s Hospital, Oakland.

I started teaching at Samuel Merritt University in the early 80’s and when the AIDS pandemic started co-founded the Nurses Coalition on AIDS, the west coast precursor of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care and worked part time as a hospice nurse. During the 90’s I worked with Patricia Benner at UCSF and completed a PhD in HIV/AIDS nursing and a year as a Fulbright Professor at the University of Tromsø, Norway. I left Samuel Merritt University in 1998 to become the Division Chair for Health Sciences at Mercy College in New York and held academic appointments at New York Medical College and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. I returned to Samuel Merritt University as Professor and Associate Dean in the School of Nursing in 2005 and received a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellowship in 2006.
