Dr. August graduated from the University of San Francisco with a BSN in 1982. After working as a Staff Nurse at St. Mary's Hospital and Medical Center in San Francisco for two years, she began graduate studies at UCSF and graduated with an MSN and Family Nurse Practitioner certificate in 1986. In 2008, she complete her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Rush University in Chicago, Illinois. In 2011, she completed the Interdiscplinary Master of Public Health Program at the University of California, Berkeley.
She has been teaching at Samuel Merritt University in the Family Nurse Practitioner program since 2001 and was the director of that program from 2006 - 2010. She has been in continuous clinical practice as a nurse practitioner since 1986. Her areas of interest are infectious disease, lipid screening and cardiovascular health, pharmacology and primary care.
In addition to being instrumental in the establishment of the Davis Street Primary Care Clinic - a Samuel Merritt University interdisciplinary faculty practice primary care clinic for the uninsured located in San Leandro - she has been involved in the development of global health curriculum and continues to take students on medical missions to Panamá to deliver health care to the indigenous and rural poor in that country.
She currently practices as a nurse practitioner in the Department of Anesthesia at the VA Medical Center in San Francisco.
Research Interests:
Global health (women's health and urinary tract infections; micronutrient malnutrition and stunting in indigenous populations), Nurse Practitioner primary care; Nurse Practitioner role transition and interdisciplinary practice.
