Configuring Blackberry for Exchange email

Configure Blackberry so you can check and send email with your Exchange email account.

Before You Begin

These instructions explain how to configure your Blackberry for Exchange email.

To use your Blackberry to access your Exchange calendar, contacts, and tasks (along with Exchange email), you must have a Blackberry license. Blackberry licenses can be either purchased or requested at no cost.

The instructions below do not require a Blackberry license. They are intended for those who want access to Exchange email, but do not need access to Exchange calendaring.

Configure Blackberry for Exchange Email

The easiest way to set up your email account on your Blackberry is to use the Blackberry website provided by your service provider. To set up Blackberry with Exchange mail settings, do the following:

  • Go to the Blackberry website hosted by your service provider. We recommend using a computer to visit the website, but you could use the web browser on your Blackberry device if you prefer. Links to popular service providers are shown below.
  • Log in to the Blackberry website with your Blackberry user name and password.
  • Click the Set Up Account button.
  • Enter your email address in the Email address: box. Your email address is SMU email address (
  • Make sure you leave the password boxes empty.
    • Important: You must leave the password boxes empty so that the Blackberry website gives you the option to manually configure your email settings.
  • Click Next.
  • Select I will provide the settings to add this email account.
  • Click Next.
  • Select This is my work email account.
  • Click Next.
  • Select I can access my email account using a Web browser (Outlook Web Access).
  • Click Next.
  • Complete the form.
    • Enter  in the Outlook Web Access URL: box.
    • Enter your SMU User ID in the User name: box.
    • Enter your password in the Password: box. (This is the password you use to log in to your Exchange email account.)
    • Enter your email address in the Email address: box. Your email address is (This box may already be filled out.)
    • Enter your SMU ID in the Mailbox name: box.
  • Click Next.
  • You will receive the message, You have successfully configured access to: Click OK.

Your Blackberry is now configured to send and receive email using your Exchange email account.

  • It may take up to 20 minutes before you begin receiving email on your Blackberry.
  • You should be able to send email immediately.

Important Information About Meeting Invites

If you accept a meeting invite on your Blackberry, the following events will occur:

  • A response is sent to the meeting coordinator indicating that you have accepted the meeting.
  • Your Blackberry calendar is updated with the meeting.
  • Your Exchange calendar is not updated with the meeting.

To avoid confusion, we recommend that you do not interact with meeting invites on a Blackberry configured with the instructions above. Instead, use Outlook, Entourage, or OWA to accept and decline meeting invites.
