Connecting to VPN
Equipment: Laptop, Cisco VPN application, Faculty or Staff member with account enabled for VPN
(If you were issued a Samuel Merritt University laptop, the Cisco VPN application should be installed)
- Step 1. Connect to the network and verify access to the internet
Open a browser window. You should be able to browse to the internet
If you are connected to SMU-WiFi network, you will need to sign into the portal page




- Step 2. Connect to VPN
Click on Start > All Programs > Cisco Systems VPN Client > VPN Client

Delete 'mwalton' and enter your login name and password. Click "Ok".

You should get a banner stating you have successfully connected. Click "Continue".

Common VPN error messages
Error 403: Unable to contact the security gateway
What happened ? Most likely you haven't connected to a network.
- Check to see you are connected to a wireless network and can browse to the internet.

Error 412: Remote peer is no longer responding
What happened ? You are probably connected to a network but the VPN client cannot reach the VPN authentication server.
- Check to see you can browse to the internet. (most likely you need to authenticate to the portal page)

Error 413: User authentication failed
What happened ? Your username and/or password is not recognized. Click ok and attempt to sign on again.
- Note: this could also mean the VPN client is configured with the wrong profile.

Error 422: Lost contact with security gateway
What happened ? You lost connectivity to the network. Reestablish connection to the network, make sure you can browse to the internet, and connect to VPN again.
