Before requesting an article, look in the library’s Journal/eBook Finder for the title & date of the journal containing the article.

If you see: Then:
Link(s) to online content
  • Click the link to go to the full-text articles for that journal.

  • If you’re onsite, locate the bound journal section. You may scan or photocopy the article.
  • If you’re offsite:

  • Submit the Request Library Materials form.
  • We’ll get a free PDF of the article from another library and email it to you, usually in 2-5 business days.

     As of 2019, SMU Libraries have limits on interlibrary loan requests:

  • Students may submit a total of 20 requests per semester, with 5 active requests at a time.
  • After the first 20 requests, each additional request will incur a $2 fee.
  • Exceptions will be made for staff, faculty and for students working on synthesis and thesis assignments.

Books/Recordings

Before requesting a book or recording, search for it in the library's catalog.

If the item is in the catalog
  • The catalog page for the item will indicate where the item is located.
If your campus has copies but they're all checked out
  • Place a hold on the item in the catalog.
  • When a copy is returned, we’ll hold it for you and email you that you can pick it up.
If your campus doesn’t have a copy, but another campus does
  • Place a hold on the item in the catalog.
  • Pick up within 3 days. After 3 days, your hold will be removed.
  • We'll deliver the item to your campus library for you to pick up, usually in 2-5 business days.
If the item isn’t in the catalog  
  • Submit the Request Library Materials form.
  • We’ll borrow the item from another library and email you when it arrives at your campus library for you to pick up, usually within 2 weeks.
  • Pick up within 7 days.
  • The loan period is determined by the lending library, averaging a 3 week loan.Renewals may be available depending on the lending library.
