New Online Resources
The Library added these online resources to its collection of Online Article Indexes and Databases:
  • Image Search (EBSCO) searches for images across the full-text databases the library obtains from EBSCO (Alt Health Watch, CINAHL Plus, Biomedical Reference Collection). [May 2009]
  • National Guideline Clearinghouse offers syntheses of selected guidelines that cover similar topic areas and expert commentary on issues of interest and importance to the clinical guidelines community. [May 2009]
  • DynaMed is a point-of-care reference resource designed to provide doctors and medical researchers with the best available evidence to support clinical decision-making. [January 2009]
  • Joanna Briggs Institute. Established in 1996 in Adelaide, Australia, the Institute now coordinates 40 centers around the world working to promote evidence-based health care, conducting systematic reviews and developing Best Practice Information Sheets. ProQuest is making available evidence-based nursing content. [April 2008]
  • GreenFILE is a database from EBSCOhost covering all aspects of human impact on the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. [April 2008]
  • UpToDate is a database of evidence-based reviews covering 13 medical specialties that are written by 3600 expert clinicians and updated quarterly. Currently the database is available on one computer only in the Library’s Computer Lab – the one closest to the GoPrint station. [April 2008]
  • Lexi-Comp added the following to their database: Electronic Orange Book: approved drug products with therapeutic equivalence evaluations; FDA Recalls: market withdrawals and safety alerts in the last 60 days; New Drugs: the latest information on newly approved drugs; Dangerous Abbreviations: errors caused by misinterpreted abbreviations; NLM Household Products: health and safety information on household products. [May 2007]
  • The TRIP (Turning Research Into Practice) database added a series of reviews in specific topic areas. The reviews consist mainly of a collection of links to recent research and guidance in an area. [May 2007]
  • Cochrane Library (Wiley) provides access to the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews with MeSH search capabilities, full-text linking from PubMed, and PDF formats. [February 2007]
  • Lexi-Comp Online has full-text drug information including interactions, IV compatibility, drug ID from color, shape and imprint information, patient care information, toxicology, and information about natural products. [February 2007]
  • Sage Publications consists of 440 full-text journals covering a wide array of subjects. [February 2007]
  • PILOTS has worldwide literature on post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) by the National Center for PTSD. [December 2006]
  • POPLINE makes available worldwide reproductive health literature from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health/Center for Communication Programs. [December 2006]
  • TRIP (Turning Research Into Practice) consists of evidence-based research from multiple sources. [December 2006]
  • World Health News is an online news digest from the Center for Health Communication at the Harvard School of Public Health. [December 2006]
  • CINAHL Plus includes indexing back to 1937, evidence-based care sheets & quick lessons, 350 research instrument records, more continuing education modules, more masters theses, and more full-text. [December 2006]
  • MD Consult Core Collection includes 43 full-text books, 89 full-text journals, drug information, news, and patient education information. [December 2006]
  • Mosby’s Nursing Consult has 9 full-text books, 21 full-text journals, drug information, news, and patient education information. [December 2006]

Database Trials
The Library had trial subscriptions to these databases:
  • Mosby's Nursing Skills is an online tool documenting more than 1,000 skills and procedures adapted from leading nursing resources. They are grouped into the following categories: adult and maternal/newborn skills and procedures, pediatric skills and procedures, mental health skills and procedures, and surgery skills and procedures. Each procedure consists of a short 1-2 page summary, a competency checklist, a list of needed supplies, an online test, a video or animation demonstration of the skill, images and graphics to further explain the skill, and extended text detailing rationales and important nursing considerations. Each skill/procedure follows a formal review schedule and updates are made on a continuous basis. [expired August 2010]

  • Nursing Reference Center is a comprehensive reference tool designed to provide relevant clinical resources to nurses and other health care professionals, directly at the point-of-care. [expired June 2008]
  • Natural Standard is a clinical decision support tool that is designed to help clinicians and consumers on the safety and efficacy of herbs, supplements, vitamins, diets, nutrition, exercise, and complementary practices (yoga, chiropractic). (User ID: mla2008, Password: mla2008) [expired June 2008]
  • Faculty of 1000 Medicine: an online service that highlights and evaluates the most important articles published in medicine based on the recommendations of a faculty of over 2400 of the world’s leading clinicians and researchers. [expired October 2007]
  • Dynamed is a clinical reference tool created by physicians for physicians and other health care professionals for use primarily at the 'point-of-care'. DynaMed is updated daily and monitors the content of over 500 medical journals and systematic evidence review databases directly and indirectly by using many journal review services. DynaMed competes in the market with other similar products like UpToDate and FIRSTConsult. [expired June 2007]

Warehoused Journals [August 2010]
The Graziano Library Annex has been emptied and many of the journals in it have moved offsite to warehouse storage. If the journal you need is warehoused, the Print & Electronic Journals list will indicate "SMU Warehoused Journals (Click to request)". Clicking that link will take you to a form where you can request a copy of the article you need. You will be emailed a PDF copy of the article, usually within 24 hours. This free service is available to the SMU campus community, ABSMC staff, and the public.

After-Hours Drop Box for Library Materials [August 2010]
The library has a new after-hours drop box for returning library materials. Just outside the front door to the HEC, the drop box is white and clearly labeled. The drop box is unlocked and accepts materials when the library is closed; when the library is open, please return materials to the return slot in the library.

Changes in Accessing PsycINFO and ERIC Databases [August 2010]
The PsycINFO and ERIC databases have moved from the OvidSP platform to the EBSCOhost platform. PsycARTICLES is now also available on the EBSCOhost platform. Tutorials on searching these databases are available on this page.

Changes to CINAHL [August 2010]
CINAHL has added new limits and data elements. New limits include:
  • First Author is a Nurse
  • Any Author is a Nurse
  • Human
  • Search Pre-CINAHL only
New data elements include:
  • Digital Object Identifier (DOI) from 2009 forward
  • PubMed Central ID (PMCID) from 2009 forward

Faculty Request for a Print Article [July 2010]
To encourage and support SMU faculty research, the library has instituted a new service to provide faculty members with easier access to print journal articles.

Faculty wishing to read an article from a journal that's in the library's print collection but that isn't available online may request that the library email them a PDF copy of the article.

If the library's Print and Electronic Journals list indicates that the journal is in offsite storage, click the "SMU Warehoused Journals (Click to request)" link to request an article.

If the listing indicates that the journal is in the library's print holdings, submit the Request An Article or a Book form.

You will be emailed a PDF copy of the article, usually within 24 hours.

The Health Education Center (HEC) Daily Schedule is available online:
  1. Go to www.samuelmerritt.edu
  2. Click on Site Index (at the top of the screen)

  5. The schedule for each day is posted at 10pm the night before.

Create Instant Bibliographies with RefWorks [April 2010]
RefWorks is an online research management, writing and collaboration tool. It can help you store and share information as well as generate citations and bibliographies. It is internet-based, meaning that once you create your own account you can access it from any computer with Internet access.

You can access RefWorks from the Library’s website under “Research” and in the Online Article Indexes & Databases’ alphabetical list.

Tutorials and guides for using RefWorks are linked to on the Library’s website under Tutorials & Tips: Bibliographic Tools.

Librarians are now including in their classes instruction on exporting citations to RefWorks.

New Ebooks @ STAT!Ref [April 2010]
The Library has added 67 new ebooks from STAT!Ref. They are available via a Title search in the Library Catalog, via the STAT!Ref website, or in the alphabetical and subject lists of Electronic Books on the Library website.

Faculty Publications Display [April 2010]
As part of the university-wide effort to support and encourage faculty research, the Library is displaying faculty publications from 2009. An ongoing effort will be made to collect faculty publications so that the display can change once or twice a year.

Faculty members, don’t assume we will automatically find your work! Our alerts only find first authors who list SMU as their affiliation. Please send a copy of your newly published article to Richard Rocco rrocco@samuelmerritt.edu or to Kristi Wessenberg kwessenberg@samuelmerritt.edu.

New Interim Library Director [March 2010]
Larry Currie has joined the library staff as Interim Library Director. Most recently Larry served as Library Director at the California Academy of Sciences. Audible Medical Terms [March 2010]
MedlinePlus has a new audio pronunciation feature. Should you need to know how to pronounce words like ptosis, Sjogren’s or xeroderma pigmentosum you can follow these steps:
  1. go to MedlinePlus
  2. click on Dictionary
  3. type your word in the box & click Search
  4. click on the red speaker icon to hear the word pronounced

AMA Manual of Style, 10th ed. Online [March 2010]
Due to the enthusiastic response to the 30-day trial of the AMA Manual of Style, 10th ed. online, we have purchased a one year subscription. It can be accessed via the Library Catalog by searching for "AMA manual of style", or by scrolling through the list of Electronic Books. Off campus login is required with your SMU email name and email password.

AMA Manual of Style Online Trial [January 2010]
The library has a trial subscription of the AMA Manual of Style Online through February 27. No login is necessary from a computer on a SMU campus; for off-campus access, please contact librarian Kristi Wessenberg. See here for online help.

SMU Library Links in Google Scholar [January 2010]
Google Scholar is being added to the library’s Online Article Indexes & Databases. Tips for using it can be found in the library’s Tutorials & Tips section under “Databases – Google Scholar”.

To see “Full-Text @ SMU”:
  1. Click on “Scholar Preferences”
  2. In the box opposite Library Links type: Samuel Merritt University and click Find Library then choose it from the list
  3. Click “Save Preferences”
  4. You may need to authenticate (login with your email name and password) to access these resources.
New PubMed Features [January 2010]
When you have your own account in PubMed (see My NCBI) you can save searches, set up alerts, save citations to one or more Collections which you can customize by name, and create a Bibliography of works you have authored.

In the past you could only add citations found in PubMed to a Collection or to your Bibliography. Now you can add citations from books, meetings, presentations, patents, and citations to journal articles not found in PubMed. Read detailed instructions on how to do this here.

The PEDro Database now allows users to sign up for updates on nine topics:
  • Cardiothoracics

  • Sports
These topics are updated monthly, usually the first Monday of the month. You can also see the latest research on a topic by going to the page linked to above and clicking on one of the topics.

Color Copying @ the Library [November 2009]
The Library has two new copy machines. The one on the right side of the room can make color or black & white copies.

For a limited time, color copies will cost the same as black and white copies.

PubMed Redesign [November 2009]
The National Library of Medicine has launched a redesign of PubMed. It was available alongside the old version of PubMed, but on Oct. 26 it became the only version available. Not all of the PubMed tutorials have been updated, but these handouts have: For one-on-one training see your local librarian.

A link to PubMed’s Clinical Queries has been added to the library’s list of Online Article Indexes & Databases.

Online Learning Tools [November 2009]
The Library has added a list of Online Learning Tools to its website under Collections & Resources. The collection includes games, quizzes, evideos, lectures, visual demos and tutorials. Some highlights are:

Publications by SMU Faculty [September 2009]
It is now possible to see a list of articles written by SMU faculty in PubMed, publications written by SMU faculty in CINAHL Plus, and books and dissertations authored by SMU faculty in the Library Catalog. Please let us know if you have authored something in the Library Catalog that does not show up on one of these lists. The lists in PubMed and CINAHL Plus are determined by an author’s affiliation being SMU or SMC.

Plagiarism Resources [September 2009]
A variety of guides and tutorials on the subject of plagiarism have been gathered together on the Library website.

APA Publication Manual, 6th edition, 2010 [September 2009]
The Library has 6 copies of the new 6th edition: 3 are on Reserve and available for overnight loan; 3 are available for 2 week loan. The Library will purchase more copies as needed. Microsoft Word 2007 has a References tab with a Citations & Bibliography section that includes Style = APA.

Looking for ways to remember various groups of medical terms? Try Medical Mnemonics, a free, non-profit online searchable database of mnemonics.

New Options in PubMed [July 2009]
  • The search results sort feature in PubMed that used to say "Graziano Library" now says "Graziano Library or Free Full Text". Let us know if this works for you.
  • If you have your own account in PubMed, a MyNCBI account, your recent search activity is saved there now for 6 months! Please contact your librarian if you need help setting up your MyNCBI account in PubMed.
Add Your Own Notes in CINAHL [July 2009]
The databases the Library purchases from EBSCO (CINAHL Plus, Alt Health Watch, Biomedical Reference Center and MEDLINE) now allow you to add your own notes to a record. EBSCO has provided a Help Sheet with screen shots. Please contact your librarian if you need further assistance.

New Tutorial on Peer Review [May 2009]
The video tutorial Peer Review in 5 Minutes, created by North Carolina State University Research & Information Services, is available in the Library Catalog and on the Tutorials & Tips page under "Peer Review."

Library Archives Books Have Moved [May 2009]
The Library Archives books have been moved back to the main Library. They shelve in call number order at the end of the regular book collection; all are labeled “Archives.”

NIH Public Access Policy Made Permanent [May 2009]
When President Obama signed the 2009 Consolidated Appropriations Act on March 12, 2009, a provision in it made permanent the National Institutes of Health Public Access Policy.

New Complete Skeleton [March 2009]
Thanks to Andy Chamberlin, Lab Manager, the Library now has a new complete plastic skeleton with painted muscle origins and insertions. Every part on the skeleton is numbered and explained in an attached printed guide. It can be checked out for use in the library for 2 hours.

Prepare for the USMLE Online [March 2009]
A free QBank for the USMLE Step 1 & Step 2 is available at http://www.wikitestprep.org.

New PubMed Features [October 2008]
  • My Bibliography

    If you save your searches (and create alerts) in PubMed using My NCBI – it now has a new feature called My Bibliography. This is where you can store all of your own articles that are indexed by PubMed. This trifold brochure from the National Library of Medicine provides more details and so does this Latitudes article from the National Network of Medical Libraries Pacific Southwest Region.
  • Converter

    NCBI has created a converter that will allow users to input a PubMed (PMID) ID number when you only have the PubMed Central ID (PMCID) number. You can also enter a PMCID and get its associated PMID.

The library has a bicycle tire pump available at the circulation desk for two-hour checkout.

Library Front Entrance Renovation [August 2008]
Please excuse the mess and noise in the library for the next few weeks while the library front entrance is updated to provide better access. And a new door to the HEC office will mean that HEC staff won’t have to enter and exit through the library.

During the construction please enter the library through the back door near the restrooms.

UC San Francisco Medical Grand Rounds [August 2007]
This is a subject listing of talks given at the University of California San Francisco on a variety of medical topics dating from 2005 – 2007 and now available on DVD. These items can be borrowed for 2 weeks.

More Tutorials & Tips [August 2007]
Under Research on the Library website, more tutorials and tips have been collected, focusing on citation help, Internet searching, software, bibliographic tools, calculators, and posters.

New Database Tutorials & Guides [May 2007]
The Library has created a new web page listing aids to improve your searching of library databases. For example, if you've forgotten how to search PubMed using MeSH, try watching the tutorial. Or, if you're unsure how to search the Cochrane Library, try looking at the Quick Reference Guide.

Extended Library Hours [January 2007]
In response to student feedback via the Student Climate Survey, library hours have been extended. The library now opens at 7:30am Monday-Friday and remains open until 10 pm Sunday–Thursday. The library also opens an hour earlier than before on Saturday, at 11am.

Microsoft Office Added to Library Lab Computers [November 2006]
All computers in the library computer lab now have Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). This enhancement is a result of the Student Climate Survey.
