Computer Lab
The computer lab in the rear of the library is equipped with nine computers for use by SMC students, faculty, and staff. Each computer has a floppy drive, a DVD-ROM drive, a USB port to which you can connect a flash drive, and network access to a laser printer. Microsoft Office is installed on each of these computers.
Public Computers
Six public computers are located in the front of the library. These computers provide access to the internet and the library's catalog and databases. Samuel Merritt College and Summit Medical Center affiliates have priority use of these computers.
Each computer has a USB port to which you can connect a flash drive; some computers have floppy drives, while others have DVD-ROM drives. Microsoft Office has been installed on two of these computers; the others allow viewing, but not creating or editing, of Microsoft Office documents.
Borrowing a Laptop
SMC students, faculty, and staff can check out laptop computers for use in the library. Each laptop has a DVD-ROM drive, a USB port to which you can connect a flash drive, Microsoft Office, and wireless access to the internet. Printing a document from a laptop requires using either a flash drive or email to transfer the document to a library desktop computer.
Your Laptop & the Library
The library provides wireless access to the internet. Each study carrel is equipped with a power outlet. Printing a document from your laptop requires using either a flash drive or email to transfer the document to a library desktop computer.
Copying & Printing
There are two photocopiers in the front corner of the library directly across from the entrance. Each computer in the library is networked to a laser printer, one printer serving the computer lab and the other serving the public computers.
Copying and printing in the library requires the use of a copy card. Cards may be purchased from the vending machine located near the photocopiers or from the vending machine in the Peralta computer lab. Value may be added to existing copy cards at either vending machine. The library cannot provide refunds for lost or damaged cards and cannot provide change.
Instructions for using copy cards are posted on the printers and near the library computers.
Viewing Videos & DVDs
The Library has four group study rooms each with a combination video/DVD player. These rooms are reserved for group viewing. There are also four study carrels equipped with VCRs and headphones for viewing by one or two people at a time.
