On March 8, 2013, the California School of Podiatric Medicine (CSPM) at Samuel Merritt University (SMU) held its seventeenth annual White Coat Ceremony for the class of 2016.
With over two hundred family members, friends and other guests in the audience, forty-two first year podiatric medical students were presented their first white clinic coat by faculty members from the departments of applied biomechanics, medicine, podiatric surgery and preclinical sciences.
In 1996, CSPM was motivated to establish the White Coat Ceremony as a starting place to encourage the student doctors to cease the negative competition with each other, promote the importance of humanism in podiatric medicine, and to inspire the concept of teamwork in medicine. The White Coat Ceremony also signifies the transition from a basic science oriented, classroom setting to the clinical arena of patient-centered learning.
Ronald D. Jensen, DPM, Past President of the American Podiatric Medical Association and a member of the CSPM Alumni & Associates along with Daniel C. Fulmer, DPM, who is an Executive Committee member of the Alumni & Associates, each delivered keynote addresses. At the conclusion of the program, the students took an Oath of Commitment.
