Department of Physical Therapy Presents 36 White Coats at Ceremony
Samuel Merritt University (SMU) awarded 36 DPT students with the white coats they will wear beginning on January 21, 2013 when they begin working with patients during their first clinical placements.
The DPT White Coat Ceremony, which took place on January 15, symbolizes the learning transition from the classroom into the clinic. The students recited an oath affirming their commitment to clinical education, recognizing the special part that patients and clients play in their education.
DPT Class of 2015 co-presidents, Cord Flora and Krissy Waller, delivered the student welcome. The keynote speaker was Roger Herr, PT, MPA, COS-C, Chief Home Health Executive of Sutter Health Care at Home, and member of the Board of Directors of the American Physical Therapy Association.
Because of the importance of clinicians in the education of PT students, the department recognizes one clinic each year at the White Coat Ceremony with the Excellence in Physical Therapy Clinical Education Award.
This year, The Excellence in Physical Therapy Clinical Education Award was given to David Grant United States Air Force Medical Center, located at Travis Air Force Base. In attendance were Major Jeremiah Y. Samson, PT, MSPT, OCS, COMT, FAAOMPT and Captain Russell J. Bishop, PT, DPT. Capt. Bishop is a graduate of SMU’s DPT program.
A reception followed the ceremony.
