TEAS FAQs

Q:  What is the TEAS?
A:  TEAS stands for Test of Essential Academic Skills.  It was developed to measure basic essential skills in the academic content area domains of reading, mathematics, science and English and language usage. 

Q:  Who is required to take the TEAS?
A:  All applicants to the BSN, ABSN and ELMSN programs at SMU are required to have a TEAS score.

Q:  When do I need to take the TEAS?
A:  TEAS scores are used as part of the admission review process.  Therefore all applicants must have the TEAS completed and a score available at the time of application.

Q:  Will applications be reviewed without the TEAS?
A:  No.  Applications without the TEAS will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed.

Q: What version of the TEAS should I take?
A: We will accept any version of the TEAS.

Q:  How do I know the score I received on the TEAS?
A:  You need to log into your ATI account to check your TEAS scores.  Under the main menu, select My Results, click on EXAM and the scores will populate.

Q:  How soon are the TEAS scores available?
A:  Test scores will be posted to your ATI account at www.atitesting.com 48 business hours after completion of the test.

Q:  Are the PSI Testing Centers equipped to accommodate my special needs?
A: 
 All examination centers are equipped to provide access in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and every reasonable accommodation will be made in meeting a candidate’s needs. Applicants with disabilities or those who would otherwise have difficulty taking the examination should review the candidate information bulletin for instructions or call our ADA Services Team at 1-800-733-9267 ext 6750 for further information.

Q:  How do I report my TEAS score to SMU?
A:  Unofficial TEAS scores should be self-reported by you directly on the space provided on the application for admission.  You should also include a copy of the TEAS score form with the application. 

Q:  What is the format of the TEAS?
A:  The TEAS is a 170-item, multiple-choice assessment, covering the four areas of reading, mathematics, science and English and language usage.   

Q:  How long is the exam?
A:  The exam is 3 1/2 hours in length. 

Q:  Are calculators allowed on the TEAS?
A:  No.

Q:  Where can I take the TEAS?
A:  The TEAS is given at a PSI Testing Center.  Currently these are the PSI Testing Center locations in CA:

Q.  What are the minimum scores required on the TEAS?
A.   It is highly suggested that your scores meet or exceed the national score averages for your particular TEAS exam. These national score averages are posted on the transcript that have your TEAS score results that you receive from ATI.

Q:  Will you look at sub-section scores or just the composite?
A:  We will look at sub-section scores for Reading and Math, as well as Composite score. Again, we expect candidates to meet and/or exceed the national average based on the date they completed the test. We do not round scores.

Q:  What kind of study guides are available for the TEAS?
A:  Two products are available to help you as you prepare for the TEAS. The TEAS Study Manual is written specifically to address the needs of students preparing to take the TEAS or those who need additional help after testing.  The TEAS Online Practice Assessment is available for students desiring additional test preparation material.  Both of these study guides can be purchased at www.atitesting.com/onlinestore.

Q:  How many times may I take the TEAS?
A:  SMU does not limit the number of times you can take the TEAS.

Q:  How long are TEAS scores valid?
A:  SMU has no expiration date for TEAS scores.

Q: Where do I find my scores?
A:  Your Adjusted Individual Total Score is reported on the right side of the first line in the box at the top of your printed test results.

Q:  Will SMU still accept the NET?
A:  No.

Q:  I am a currently enrolled student in one of the nursing partnership schools.  Where and when do I need to take the TEAS?
A:  Please contact the advisor at your current college/university for specific TEAS registration information.  Please note that TEAS scores must be available to SMU at the time your file is forwarded to us for review.  Files that do not have TEAS scores will not be reviewed.
