OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- More than a dozen nursing students from Oakland head to Southeast Asia next week to give needed medical assistance to residents of a Laotian village. The students, and some faculty members from Samuel Merritt College in Oakland have been to Laos the past two summers.

The conditions are so rural that nurses pack items such as toothbrushes and other toiletries, clothes, and vitamin drinks to give to the people there.

"I'm really inspired because it's a really pure way of giving back, in that everything that's being donated is going completely towards the people of Laos. There's no administrative overhead, or fees attached," said one of the traveling nurses.

The nursing students receive one credit for the course, but have to work to pay their own way to Southeast Asia.
