University Holds Vigil in Memory of Nursing Student, Michelle Le
(Oakland, Ca, Sept. 23, 2011) Michelle Le's family, along with Samuel Merritt University (SMU), will be holding a vigil to remember Michelle on Tuesday, September 27, from 6 – 8PM at the Oakland campus. The service will allow the SMU community, family, and friends to honor and celebrate Michelle.
"We hope that being together will help us to begin to cope with the loss of Michelle while at the same time honor her life," said Elizabeth Valente, SMU spokesperson. "September 27 marks the four-month anniversary of Michelle's disappearance. Heartache and sadness hover over the University as classmates, faculty, staff, and friends, mourn the violent death of one of our own -- fellow classmate and friend, Michelle Le. She was studying to become a nurse taking classes in the Accelerated Bachelors of Science in Nursing program at SMU."
Le was reported missing by her fellow nursing students and faculty from Kaiser Permanente Hayward Medical Center on Friday, May 27. She was last seen at the medical center parking garage where she was on a break during a clinical rotation. On Sept. 19, Hayward Police Department contacted University officials to report that the remains found in Alameda County were those of Michelle. Due to on-going forensic pathology examinations, police are not detailing the exact manner and cause of Michelle's death.
"I join Michelle's classmates and others in the SMU community in profound sadness over the death of Michelle Le," said Samuel Merritt University President Sharon Diaz. "Our board, administrators, faculty, staff and students offer our deepest condolences to Michelle's family and many friends. Michelle had so much to live for and sought only to give to others -- her life was so pointlessly taken. Something like this affects our entire campus community. It is especially important, in this time of grief that we reach out to one another."
