About the Safe Zone Program
The SMU Safe Zone program is sponsored by Samuel Merritt University’s Pride Committee. The mission of the Safe Zone Program is to provide an accepting, supportive, and pro-active environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer, questioning, and intersexed (LGBTQQI) students, faculty, staff, and their allies.
Safe Zone Trainings
SMU staff members Rachel H. Luna, M.A. and Anglyn Sasser, Psy.D., will be conducting Safe Zone trainings. Training dates and times will be announced here and via email. Email Rachel or Anglyn if you are interested in attending a Safe Zone training.
The Safe Zone program has four primary objectives:
1. To identify and train a network of allies who are concerned, empathic, and knowledgeable about LGBTQQI issues.
2. To provide evidence of the support of LGBTQQI people and their allies within the SMU community by posting a sign as tangible evidence of that support.
3. To reduce the fear of reprisal and discrimination of LGBTQQI people and their allies within the SMU community.
4. To assist LGBTQQI and allied students in achieving their educational goals by creating an environment in which they can be themselves.
