Summary of Considerations, Benefits, and Challenges

Considerations

  • Determine target audience (e.g. freshmen, seniors, undergraduate, graduate)
  • Determine “model” (e.g. course vs program, and types of info contained)
  • Publishing and privacy issues, IRB and student agreements; institutions can lock-down what’s covered under the Privacy Act

Benefits

  • Opportunity for students to “self-present,” i.e. demonstrate their learning through one’s individual interpretation and synthesis; authorship, ownership of one’s education
  • Reflects learning that happens inside and outside the classroom
  • Demonstrate integration of knowledge, e.g. interdisciplinary
  • Good for qualitative assessment
  • Majority of students (75% of USD) that participated in pilot recommended for all students

Challenges

  • Implementing new methodology and integrating with existing curriculum
  • Time to develop appropriate and reliable rubrics
  • Choosing technology to support eportfolios and skills development for faculty and students
