A current Samuel Merritt College, Summit Medical Center, or Samuel Merritt College alumni identification badge must be presented to borrow library materials.

Course Reserve Materials

Reserve items circulate as labeled and only to Samuel Merritt College students, faculty, and staff. These items may be borrowed on a first-come, first-served basis and may be renewed if no one else is waiting to borrow the item. Two-hour reserve materials may be borrowed for overnight use if checked out less than two hours before the library closes; in this case, the item must be returned by 9:00 the following morning.

Course reading packets circulate for two hours.

Videotapes circulate for two hours and may not be taken from the library.

Laptop computers circulate for two hours and may not be taken from the library.

Renewing Library Materials

You may renew an item for one additional loan period if no one else is waiting to borrow the item. Items may be renewed in any of the following ways:

• Renew online by going to SAMMY [1], clicking on My Account [2], and entering your nine-digit student ID number (including leading zeros). Reserve items may not be renewed online.
• Renew over the telephone by calling the Circulation Desk at 510-869-8900.
• Bring the item to the Circulation Desk anytime the library is open.

Non-circulating materials

In order to assure maximum availability to all patrons, reference books and journals may be used only in the library and cannot be checked out.

Overdue and Fines

Borrowers are responsible for knowing when their books are due and for returning them on time. As a courtesy, the library attempts to send reminders to borrowers with overdue books. The library is not responsible for non-receipt of overdue reminders, and fines will not be waived due to non-receipt of overdue notices.

The following fines are assessed for overdue materials:

• Items that circulate for one or two weeks: $0.10 per day
• Two-hour reserve materials: $5.00 per day
• Two-day reserve materials: $1.00 per day

The Samuel Merritt College Registrar will not register students or release student records for students with unpaid fines or bills.

My Account

My Account [3] is a feature of SAMMY [4], the library's online catalog, that enables registered users to see what items they have checked out and when they are due, to renew non-reserve items online, to place a hold on an item currently checked out to another borrower, and to save catalog searches to be run again.

After Hours Return Box

On the Oakland campus, materials may be returned during hours the Library is closed by depositing them in the orange return box located at the southwest corner of Lower Towne Court.
