** Student Health Insurance FAQ
In order to comply with clinical requirements and accrediting obligations, Samuel Merritt University requires all students to have and maintain a high level of medical insurance. Students are required to maintain their health insurance to cover health care costs not covered by Student Health Services and during periods when the University is not in session.
Maintaining health insurance coverage is mandatory for all full-time SMU students and all students MUST be covered by a domestic health insurance plan. All students are required to enroll in the SMU Student Health Insurance Plan unless an acceptable Waiver is provided in a timely manner. The acceptable coverage to waive the SMU Student Health Insurance Plan is a parent's employer group plan, a spouse's employer group plan, a student's own employer group plan, Medicaid, COBRA or VA Benefits.
The University offers a PPO plan through Anthem Blue Cross, complete with prescription drug plan, co-pays, vision and dental exams, and the ability to enroll dependents, spouse and domestic partners. Students can waive this plan if they have equal or better benefits through one of the acceptable coverage mentioned above.
Students who do not have other insurance or whose insurance does not meet the waiver requirements are required to enroll in the policy offered through the University. The insurance fee is billed per semester to each student unless and until the student provides proof of alternative coverage.
All students must submit one of the forms below by their orientation date to document that she/he chooses to enroll in the University plan or that she/he has other coverage that meets the University's requirements. If a form is not received for a student by the orientation date, the University will force enroll that student in the University sponsored plan, and the student will be responsible for such charges.
