Rubrics

Canvas rubrics enable instructors to communicate measurable assessment expectations to students.

A rubric is an assessment tool for communicating expectations of quality. It defines the various criteria used to assess an assignment and the levels of performance for each criterion. A Canvas rubric is used to align course learning outcomes (CLOs) to assignments.

Benefits

A rubric created in Canvas allows instructors to communicate measureable assessment expectations to students, grade online submissions in the SpeedGrader™, and align course learning outcomes (CLOs) to the course assignments (assessments).

Best Practice Recommendations

  • Create a Canvas rubric for each course assignment (project, paper, quiz, exam, graded discussion, presentation).
  • Align CLOs to assignments.
  • Add grading criteria to the rubric.
