Caption Your Videos

After uploading your videos to Panopto you can order professional captions. It takes 3-4 business days for the SMU's caption service to complete an order. Optionally, Panopto videos offer automatically generated ASR caption. Below, read more about professional and ASR captions for your videos.

ASR - Automatic Speech Recognition

Starting January 28, every video that is uploaded to Panopto will automatically generate  ASR captions. No action is required by you. ASR is not 100% accurate, but you can edit the captions in the Panopto Editor.

Professional Captions

Professional captions are also available. Once the professional captions are complete, they will automatically replace the ASR captions.

Follow the steps below on how to order professional closed captions. The professional captions will automatically replace the  ASR captions once the order is complete.

When you should order professional captions

  • When students with accommodations are enrolled in your course you are required to order captions for all course videos (Panopto, YouTube, and Vimeo, Webex, Zoom)
  • All Pre-recorded lectures
  • Pre-recorded "Capstone" presentations
  • Recordings shared with the public

When professional captions are not required

  • Recordings of synchronous classes (unless students with accommodations are enrolled in the course)
  • Recordings of meetings, such as department meetings

Captions for Zoom recordings

Zoom recordings are stored in two places. Both can automatically generate ASR captions.

  • In Zoom
-All live recordings are stored in Zoom (Cloud Recordings).
-Enable "viewers can see transcriptions" in the "share" recordings settings. This setting generates ASR captions, plus transcript.

  • In Panopto
All Zoom "recordings" are also automatically uploaded to Panopto at the "end" of every meeting. These recordings are now considered Panopto videos, and are automatically captioned with ASR.
*You can find the uploaded recordings inside your "My Folder" --> "Meeting Recordings"
*To share videos with your students:
        1.  Move the videos to the Panopto folder for the course - see (text guide) (video guide)
        2.  Embed the Panopto video in Canvas - see (text guide) (video guide)
Only the faculty and students enrolled in the course can access the videos in the course.
