President's Ambassador Program

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Samuel Merritt University (SMU) President’s Ambassador Program is to provide student leaders who participate in an official capacity at special events throughout the year. This program, which brings together students from various academic disciplines, serves to enrich and enhance leadership and communication skills, personal growth, and professional development for its membership while creating long lasting ties with their future alma mater.

Purpose:

The SMU President’s Ambassadors are trained student leaders who are responsible for promoting unity and engagement among the SMU student body. Ambassadors will, at the request of the President, represent the University in a variety of venues, including, but not limited to public events, fundraising activities, community service events, speaking engagements, student recruitment activities, and other informational or educational sessions where both the Ambassador and the University will benefit by linking outreach effort to professional and leadership development.

Application:

The SMU President's Ambassador Program is our way of engaging students in events and activities on and off campus. We are recruiting a cohort of  students from historically underrepresented populations and their allies to serve as ambassadors who carry the message of institutional quality, inclusiveness, and educational opportunity.  This message will be delivered to potential students and community groups who promote and support educational success.  Ambassadors will, at the request of the President, represent the University in a variety of venues, including fundraising activities, community service events, speaking engagements, student recruitment activities and other informational or educational sessions where both the ambassador and the University will benefit by linking outreach efforts to professional and leadership development.

Ambassador Expectations:

  • Commit to the program for at least 12 months (January - December)
  • Participate in at least five (5) events/activities
  • Remain in Good Academic Standing (program dependent)
  • Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude
  • Attend the mandatory Ambassador Orientation the week of February 5-10, 2018.

Benefits:

  • Ambassadors will gain valuable experience through deepened engagement in constituent communities and exposure to critical networks of people and organizations that are valuable to their professional growth.
  • Ambassadors will gain new experience in public speaking, leadership roles, and organizational skills.
  • Ambassadors will receive continuing mentoring experiences from University representatives with whom they work and travel.
  • Ambassadors and SMU will actively and honestly engage in activities that promote diversity and inclusion.
  • Participation in the Ambassadors program will be noted on their SMU academic transcripts
  • Ambassadors can include this experience on their resume

Ambassador Requirements:

Applicants must be currently enrolled, be in good academic standing, and have completed at least one semester as a student at Samuel Merritt University prior to serving as a student ambassador. Candidates must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to articulate the characteristics of the University and describe their experience as a SMU student in an objective and professional manner.

2018 President’s Ambassador Application Timeline:

  • December 8, 2017: Application Opens
  • January 12, 2018: Application Deadline
  • February 2, 2018: Ambassadors will be selected and notified by email
