Faculty Bio
Donna Breger-Stanton
OTD, OTR/L, CHT
I have been an occupational therapist for many years. In that time I have worked in neurorehabilitation, mental health, orthopedics, sensory integration, pediatrics, hand therapy and pre-vocational rehabilitation. I spent most of my professional career as a hand therapist and very involved with the American Society of Hand Therapists. I was president in 2005. I then joined Samuel Merritt University in 1998 as the Academic Fieldwork Coordinator, as well as teach several classes, primarily focused on research in most recent years. I graduated in OT from San Jose State University, then received my master's in OT from University of Southern California, and recented graduated and received my OTD from Thomas Jefferson University (I graduated May 29, 2013).
I have published and presented extensively, traveled internationally for some meetings as well as medical missions in Guatemala.
Teaching Interest
My interests range from sensory testing especially Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments, to orthotics, carpal tunnel syndrome to modalities, as well as contrast baths, and patient adherence to treatment.
Courses Taught
I taught the Charter class, 1996 as adjunct faculty to teach the class: Adaptive Technology and Modalities. I taught the class for another five years once hired full time as the Fieldwork Coordinator.
I taught Foundations of Occupational Therapy for two years, and I taught Complementary Healthcare Systems in Occupational Therapy for five years. I taught the Level I Introductory course for my first eight years as AFWC, and continue to be in charge of Level II fieldwork, OT 640, 641L as well as post professional fieldwork OT642L. I have been teaching a tract of the three semester research course for about six years with various topics covered including contrast baths, a systematic review of contrast baths, a systematic review of sensory testing including monofilaments and two-point discrimination, review of outcomes tests suggested for use in work with patients with rheumatoid arthritis, review of ACOTE standards as relates to incorporation of education of modalities in occupational therapy academic program.
