I was raised in Marin County, California and I was graduated from the University of California at San Diego in 1984. I worked for several years in the computer field before returning to school where I received my Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree with honors from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in 1993.

I completed a 24-month podiatric surgical residency at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Hayward, California and I began an academic career in podiatry in 1996 at the California College of Podiatric Medicine (now the California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt University based in Oakland).
