Professor Figueroa received her Bachelor of Health Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2000, and her post-professional Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from San Jose State University in 2015. She worked as a pediatric OT in outpatient pediatric rehabilitation at Baptist Children’s Hospital in Miami for four years, and has additional work experience in various settings, including NICU, clinics, homes, and schools. For the past 10 years, she worked primarily in school-based practice in Oakland Unified School District. Inspired by her recent work leading TimberNook camps, she launched Outdoor Kids OT, Inc., a private OT practice using an all-outdoor model of OT service provision for children. Her professional interests include sensory integration treatment, development of children’s creativity through play, complementary and alternative treatment approaches, and the impact of nature and outdoor play on children’s participation in occupations of daily life. She also loves learning about entrepreneurship, consulting, leadership, and education, and taking risks to put new ideas into practice.
