Clinically, my area of expertise is acute care physical therapy.  I've worked in a variety of different types of hospitals from large academic teaching hospitals to small community hospitals.  My clinical work is currently limited to my research in sitting balance testing and the Neuro Clinic.  I'm a board certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist in physical therapy.  I also have advanced certification and training in neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT) approaches in adults with hemiplegia and assessment and treatment of vestibular disorders. I enjoy traveling all over the world, including medical mission trips to Haiti and Panama.  I have two cats who keep me honest and laughing.

Education

DPTSc, UCSF/SFSU Graduate Programs in Physical Therapy
MS in Health Science, San Francisco State University
BS in Physical Therapy, Mount St. Mary's College, Los Angeles

Teaching Interest

My primary teaching interests are in acute care and neurologic physical therapy. I also serve as the faculty advsior to SMU's International Healthcare Club.

Courses Taught

Fall Semester

  • PT 710 Foundations of Physical Therapy Practice (co-course coordinator)
  • PT 715 Special Populations (course coordinator)

Spring Semester

  • PT 713 Neuro Pt/Client Management I
  • PT 734 Pathology & Medical Management in Neurology

Summer Semester

  • PT 744 Health Care Systems and Regulatory Aspects of PT
Research Biography

My primary research focus is exploring the psychometric properties of the Function In Sitting Test (FIST). Current projects include the determination of the clinic utility of the FIST in inpatient rehabilitation populations, the predictive validity of the FIST, and the applicability of the FIST to acute neurologic populations.

Additionally, I a working on updating and revising the Acute Care Physical Therapy Practice Analysis with the Subject Matter Expert Task Force of the Acute Care Section-APTA.

I am also working with community therapists to investigate the relationship of dynamic standing balance with pitching characteristics in youth baseball players.
