The Fact Book is published annually by the Samuel Merritt University (SMU) Office of Institutional Research and Evaluation to offer a general overview of SMU and to serve informational needs. The Fact Book provides an annual snapshot of current and historical data required by the WASC-Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) and IPEDS, including data on admissions, student enrollment, faculty and staff, degrees conferred, campus facilities, and SMU finances.
The 2016-2017 Fact Book is entirely electronic, published online using Tableau software. It is composed of two sections:
- Data Exhibits: This section contains institutional and program level data displays and associated trends. Many included exhibits are mandated by WSCUC, SMU's regional accreditation commission. Most of the data exhibits included in this section are interactive where users can interact with the data by using filters to select variables of interest.
- Custom Data Displays: Using the interactive table and graph in this section, users can choose from a variety of demographic variables to create their own data displays. These data displays are based on SMU student enrollment totals from Fall 2012 through Fall 2016.
All student and employee data contained in the Fact Book are reported in aggregate. No identifying student or employee information is reported. The Fact Book is in compliance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA).
