About Me

A Bay Area native, Audrey received her BSN, MSN, and PhD from the University of California San Francisco (and was actually also born there).  She began her career at Samuel Merritt Hospital as an oncology nurse in 1973. She started teaching at the Samuel Merritt Hospital School of Nursing diploma nursing program in 1977 and has been employed there ever since. Audrey moved to Sacramento in 2001 to establish Samuel Merritt University’s first extended campus and then returned to Oakland in 2004 to become dean.

Although breast cancer is Audrey’s primary substantive interest, she has taught broadly in medical/surgical nursing with a special interest in legal issues. Her most significant publications are as first author of the former Kozier and Erb textbooks since 2002. The most recent of these are Fundamentals of nursing: Concepts, process, and practice, 11th ed., 2020 and Skills in clinical nursing, 9th ed., 2020 (in press).

Audrey serves on several boards including the Bay Area Tumor Institute, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs, California Board of Registered Nursing, Education Issues Workgroup, is a team leader for Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accreditation site visits, and is a past-president of the California Association of Colleges of Nursing.
