About Me
I am a first generation college student of color. Born and raised in a predominately Hispanic area of Los Angeles during the 1960s and 70s, education for me was not a focus in my family. I learned early on that I would have to venture out of my comfort zone in order to succeed academically. I was never a top student, and I struggled with test taking. At that time there were not as many programs to support students of color.
My journey to my Masters degree was long and arduous. I love being a nurse and my goal is to assist student nurses that need support to succeed in what can be a difficult journey. Since I struggled academically, I understand the experiences that students are going through and can often relate to students. I feel this is my strength, many times students just need someone to listen to them and understand what they are going through.
Education
Associates Degree in the following: Certified Nurses Aide, Licensed Vocational Nurse, Registered Nurse. ADN to BSN, and Masters Degree in Nursing education.
Teaching Interests
I am interested in the way students process information and are able to translate that process to better testing outcomes. Although my focus is testing success, I find that teaching students to apply the same organizational and goal oriented strategies to the clinical setting are also beneficial in being an efficient and effective nurse. As NCLEX Success Coordinator for the School of Nursing my focus is to assist students to become successful not only in passing the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) but to be academically successful at Samuel Merritt University.
