N672 Professional Role Development for Advanced Nursing Practice
After 12 years working in critical care both in the ICU and ED, I realized I wanted to help people from getting to the point of needing to go to the hospital when many of what is seen there is preventable. Working at triage one day caring for a man who WALKED in with a glucose over 700 (Yes - really!) is the day I decided to become a Nurse Practitioner. I started in neurology managing conditions such as migraine, seizures, Parkinson's disease, and MS. From 2006 to 2017 I worked in liver & kidney transplant at UCSF as the lead clinical manager of many NIH and industry multi-center, national trials. I cared for and managed the study protocols for transplant patients involved in those trials. This was a valuable experience for me professionally and I appreciate all I learned from working on the UCSF Clinical Trial team in collaboration with the NIH and other research partners.
In addition to work, school & professional activities, I am busy as an active Mom caring for my 2 teenagers Lucas (16) & Sara (14). Watching Luke's baseball games & Sara's volleyball matches, coaching Sara's soccer team, gardening, sewing projects, walking my dog Willow, and sharing good times with friends & colleagues.
I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from California State University, Fresno in 1994 and concurrently trained in trauma at Stanford Hospital E2 ICU. After 10 years in ICU & ED work, I earned my Master's Degree in Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner from Sonoma State University in 2004.
I am excited to be on a path of teaching in the FNP Program and being a resource for students. I am driven to work on projects that advance the role of the Nurse Practitioner while improving access to and quality of health care in the community. There are so many improvements to be made and we can do this one step at a time.
