Job Summary:
Reporting to the Vice President for Advancement and Communications, the Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Relations is responsible for the development, management, and integration of programs that engage alumni and donors in creative and relevant ways as resources for the University, particularly its students and faculty. The Director is responsible for the strategic execution, leadership, and development of a comprehensive annual giving program at Samuel Merritt University (SMU), focusing on increasing the alumni participation rate, retention of donors, and targeted acquisition. The Director needs to be a creative self-starter who understands and appreciates the important synergy between alumni engagement and annual giving, developing programs and initiatives that leverage both disciplines to expand the SMU alumni network and donor base in the future.

The Director will work collaboratively with University Marketing & Communication, Advancement's largest partner and liaison, to ensure all Annual Giving projects leverage the University branding and messaging expertise of University Communications professionals and resources. The Director plays a pivotal role in accelerating growth in alumni and annual giving; creates and leads a unified strategy and outreach effort to create a stronger level of engagement among University alumni and friends; designs, leads, and directs the development of annual goals and objectives, operating plans and budgets, staffing, and volunteer management plans for the Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving programs.

Job Duties and Accountabilities: (all items listed below are considered essential job functions  for ADA purposes).
40% - Develop and manage a comprehensive annual giving campaign including direct mail, phone and social media solicitations and promotions, young alumni giving and marketing initiatives
40% - Develop and manage all alumni engagement activities including reunions, networking events and alumni giving initiatives. This includes management and leadership of 1-3 alumni relations staff.
10% - Develop and manage a portfolio of leadership level annual giving prospects 10
10% - Serve as a member of the VP of Advancement and Communication Leadership Team
· Other duties as assigned


Skills and Abilities:
· Knowledge of Raiser's Edge or similar fundraising database;
· Strong computer skills using MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint;
· Success in motivating professional staff and volunteers to meet goals;
· Excellent communications skills, including writing and presentation skills, as well as ability to present before a group;
· Ability to collaborate with members of multiple units/divisions in a professional manner;
· Ability to conduct proactive research (data mining, modeling, surveys, focus groups, benchmarking) and translate key findings into strategic and actionable recommendations;
· Oversees the day to day management of a staff of 1-3 employees to ensure that performance goals and expectations are met;
· Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing needs and environment;

Education and/or Experience:
· Bachelor' s degree required
· At least five years of progressively more responsible successful and diverse fundraising experience, including demonstrated success developing and executing annual giving programming and experience with alumni engagement initiatives
· Demonstrated success in leading and growing an annual giving program, preferably in an institution of higher education.
· Experience in front-line fundraising and ability to manage a small portfolio of leadership annual giving prospects and collaborate with regional and school based gift officers
· Experience conducting proactive research (data mining, modeling, surveys, focus groups, benchmarking) and translating key findings into strategic and actionable recommendations.
