DNP Admission Requirements

Applications for Post-Master's DNP and FNP-DNP Cohorts are now open on a year round basis!


To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Master of Science in Nursing (Master's degrees in other health-related fields along with a BSN will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.) For the Post-Baccalaureate FNP-DNP program, a Master's degree is not required.
  • Current RN licensure in state of residence.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher on MSN coursework.
  • The need for a TOEFL will be assessed based on information provided by applicants on the application for admission. If required, a minimum score of 100 (Internet Based Test) must be achieved and official score results must be provided.
  • A college or university level Statistics course must have been completed within the past three years with a grade of "B" or higher. If you have completed a statistics course more than three years ago, you may take another course (see attached list for suggestions for online statistics courses) or you may provide verification of successful completion (CE Certificate) of the KLIMES INSTITUTE statistics course, see  ( STATISTICS S101 & S201).

Application Checklist: You'll need the following documents to complete our online application for admission.

  • Copies of all college/university transcripts. Unofficial copies can be uploaded as a PDF into the online application. Official copies will be required upon acceptance into the program.
  • Contact person to verify how many clinical hours you completed in your MSN program (if applicable).
  • Copy of your goal statement (1-2 pages, typed, double spaced)
  • Copy of a scholarly paper from a previous academic program
  • Contact information for the three (3) persons supplying your letters of reference. Letters must be from: a recent supervisor, a nursing colleague, and a non-nursing professional colleague.
  • Copy of your resume
  • Copy of your RN license(s)
  • Copies of other certifications you would like considered along with your application

General Campus Tours of Samuel Merritt University
Summer time tours of SMU are back! These tours are not program specific, but will give an overall experience of SMU. These walking tours last about one hour and comfortable shoes should be worn. Because these tours are student led and are dependent on student schedules, advance reservation is required.
