John Venson has been selected as the dean of the California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt College in Oakland. Venson's first day on the job was June 23.

Venson received his doctor of podiatric medicine in 1976 at the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine. Since then, he has served as a faculty scholar at the Harvard-Macy Institute and Harvard Medical School.

"Dr. Venson is a frequent spokesperson for podiatric issues on local and regional media outlets and brings a wealth of experience to the college in financial management and business-best practices," said Scot Foster, Samuel Merritt academic vice president and provost.

Venson's professional experience includes associate professorships and the chairmanship of the Department of Medicine and Surgery at the School College of Podiatric Medicine; chief operations officer at the Weil Foot and Ankle Institute; and vice president of compliance and operations at Thomas White International.

Venson is also the associate director of credentials at the American Board of Podiatric Surgery in San Francisco.
