Oakland, Calif. (Aug. 12, 2017) — A team of more than 90 volunteer students, faculty, and staff from Samuel Merritt University (SMU) will provide free healthcare screenings and information to children and residents at East Oakland’s Allen Temple Baptist Church on Saturday, Aug. 12, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
The 40th Annual Health Fair at Allen Temple Baptist unites volunteer healthcare professionals and more than 90 organizations to provide basic health screenings and free school supplies for children and residents before the new school year begins.
“Allen Temple Baptist Church is excited to work again with our valued community partner in Samuel Merritt University to provide compassionate and free screenings to the people of our community,” said Reverend Charlotte Williams, Allen Temple’s director of communications. “We believe this year's fair will be our best ever, and we couldn't do that without Samuel Merritt University's partnership.”
Students and faculty from all five of SMU’s academic programs — podiatric medicine, nursing, physician assistant, occupational thearpy and physical therapy — will conduct health screenings, provide health information & coaching, and serve as “navigators,” helping participants identify and locate needed health resources.
“Working in underserved communities is part of our educational mission,” said Sharon Diaz, President and CEO of Samuel Merritt University. “Our graduates serve where they are needed most, and do so with gratitude and compassion.”
