Wellness Campus Walking Maps
We know it can be challenging to find time in your busy schedules for exercise. So we've put together a few local walking maps that may help inspire you to stroll alone, or grab a few classmates and explore the areas adjacent to campus. Form a walking group and challenge yourself (and each other) to reach the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio exercise each week.
Here are a few maps to get you started.
1. Oakland Mountain View Cemetery Walk (map)
(4.16 miles round trip)
Ok, we know it might sound a little creepy, but the Mountain View Cemetery off Piedmont Ave is truly one of the most beautiful parks around. Nestled in the foothills of Oakland and Piedmont the Mountain View Cemetery boasts a serene, park-like setting filled with fountains, lush gardens, and panoramic views of the water. Definitely worth a visit.
2. Oakland Rose Garden Walk (map) (2.86 miles round trip)
For a slightly shorter walk check out the beautiful Oakland Morcom Rose Garden route. The Amphitheater of Roses offers serene landscaping, gorgeous meandering paths of blossoms, reflecting pools, and fountains. Prime blooming season is May - June, and again late July - Sept.
3. Lake Merritt Walk (map) (5.56 miles round trip)
Lake Merritt is a great place to stroll along the grassy shores, check out the bird refuges, and the boating center where sailboats, canoes and rowboats can be rented. There is even a fun fairy tale themed amusement park called Children's Fairyland. Sit dockside at the Lake Chalet Restaurant for a nice lunch or happy hour. Or, you can even stop by Whole Foods (at Harrison and Bay Place) on the way back to campus and pick up a healthy lunch or dinner!
4. Oakland Urban Walk (map) (3.07 miles round trip)
Another great option is this Oakland Urban walk that takes you by Mosswood Park and down Piedmont Ave. Do some window shopping, grab some lunch or coffee and head back to campus refreshed and rejuvenated.
