Office of Diversity and Inclusion

Welcome to the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Our mission is to provide leadership in the development and implementation of a University-wide integrated approach to "institutionalizing a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture" - a key strategic goal for the University. Building such a culture is challenging, rewarding, and critical for developing a vibrant and innovative 21st century urban university.

Samuel Merritt University is committed to this mission. We recognize that educating a diverse healthcare workforce is central to reducing health care disparities in racial and ethnic minority communities.  We value our connections and relationships in the local community, and aspire to become a University that reflects those communities. We also recognize the importance of engaging in equitable and inclusionary practices to create a sense of belonging for our faculty, staff, and students, and we appreciate that diversity of thought, perspective, and learning styles lead to creativity, excellence, and innovation.

Collaborative engagement and collective implementation is key for successfully implementing the SMU Diversity Plan. By outlining a focused and strategic direction, the desired outcome of the plan is to inspire innovative actions that align with institutional priorities, link to academic excellence, reflect the heart of the institution, and serve a greater good. The Diversity Plan offers a map that will lead to a future where diversity, equity, and inclusion become significant hallmarks for Samuel Merritt University.

The diversity journey requires courage; it asks of us to be willing, collectively and individually, to examine and question what we know, what we don’t know, and to embrace not knowing what we don’t know. We invite you to join us in this journey.
