Professional Enrichment Day 2020 Part 1 – Sep 1, 2020

Professional Enrichment Day Part 1 - Sept. 1, 2020

The two mutually supporting themes for this year’s PED, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Wellness, reflect two current events that have greatly influenced our personal and professional lives: the COVID-19 pandemic and the global protests on police brutality and racism.  We, the PED Planning Committee, acknowledge that coming together to engage in principles of DEI and Wellness is critical in keeping our community healthy.

We therefore continue with the theme of previous PEDs by focusing on the critical topic of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.  In recognition of how challenging DEI work can be and of the difficulties we are all experiencing related to work, life, and the pandemic, we are also centering on Wellness.  Being well and resilient will help us better address Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and improving our DEI practices will support our individual wellbeing.

The PED Planning Committee is composed of members of the Faculty Development Committee, leaders of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force, leaders of BeWell SMU, Office of People and Culture, Academic and Instructional Innovation, and Office of Academic Affairs.

Although participation in PED is not mandatory, we do look forward to your contributions to the discussion.

This breakout session is for colleagues who want to come together to challenge racism and anti-blackness through engaging whiteness and white supremacy. Our intention is to create a  community of white-identified people who are ready to discuss and engage how white supremacy shows up in ourselves, our lives, and our professional practice, so that we can be better allies and partners for racial justice.

An ally is any person that actively promotes and aspires to advance the culture of inclusion through intentional, positive and conscious efforts that benefit people as a whole*.

Allyship is often described as an ongoing process, a lifelong endeavor, and one that involves a lot of work. Here is how the Trauma Transformed organization graphically represents Allyship. Join us for a dialogue to explore more about what allyship means to you and what it looks like at SMU.
