California BRN Requirements for International Nurses

Complete Your Required Coursework at SMU

If you completed your nursing education outside the United States, the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) may require additional coursework before you're eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN®).

Samuel Merritt University allows eligible internationally educated nurses to complete those requirements as Special Status Students. You'll enroll as a non-degree student and take only the nursing courses and clinical rotations identified by the California BRN.

Who Is Eligible?

You may apply as a Special Status Student if the California Board of Registered Nursing has determined that you need additional nursing coursework before moving forward with California RN licensure.

Your BRN letter will identify the specific coursework you need to complete.

What You'll Need to Apply

To apply, submit:

• Completed Special Status Student application
• $300 application fee
• Copy of your California Board of Registered Nursing letter identifying your required coursework

Before Clinical Rotations

Students approved for clinical coursework must also:

• Complete a criminal background check and drug screening
• Provide proof of health insurance
• Maintain current CPR certification
• Submit required student health documentation
