Our Military and Veteran Student Services team helps veterans and military-connected students understand their education benefits and navigate the transition to Samuel Merritt University.
Whether you're using the Post-9/11 GI Bill®, the Yellow Ribbon Program, or other approved VA education benefits, we'll help you understand your options and guide you through the enrollment process.
Applying to SMU as a Veteran
Step 1: Apply to Samuel Merritt University
To use approved VA education benefits at Samuel Merritt University, you must first apply and be admitted to an eligible academic program.
Step 2: Apply for Your VA Education Benefits
Determine your eligibility for veterans education benefits and submit your application through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Applying well before your intended start date can help prevent delays in processing your benefits.

Step 3: Complete Your Enrollment
The Department of Veterans Affairs typically processes education benefit claims in approximately 30 days. Once approved, you'll receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE).
Provide your Certificate of Eligibility to Samuel Merritt University's Military and Veteran Student Services office. Our team will help you complete the remaining enrollment and financial aid requirements.
