Nursing Ranks in Top 10
The Samuel Merritt University School of Nursing ranks in the top 10 among 55 nursing schools in California, according to Nursing Process, a nationwide organization that assesses nursing education. The rankings are determined by academic quality, licensure rates, affordability, and reputation.
“I am not surprised by this extraordinary recognition. SMU has phenomenal faculty, students, staff, and community partners. We work collaboratively to develop and implement excellent experiences for our students,” School of Nursing Dean Lorna Kendrick said of SMU clinching the tenth spot on the list. “Our curriculum is constantly evaluated and updated to make sure our students are receiving an exemplary education. We are preparing our students in hospitals and community settings where they not only learn hands-on skills, but, more importantly, how to incorporate compassion and responsive care for all.”
The School of Nursing offers 10 programs, including bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree offerings, as well as accelerated, in-person, and online options. Undergraduate students are able to complete their first two years of general-education requirements at other colleges and universities, then transfer to SMU.
Enhanced learning with simulation and AI
Aside from classroom learning, students have the opportunity to get hands-on training through simulations, internships, and dozens of community service health initiatives. The University’s state-of-the-art Health Sciences Simulation Center is home to a 5,500-square-foot facility that replicates the hospital environment and is equipped with lifelike manikins connected to complex software that mimics human physiological responses to disease, trauma, and pain.
The simulations have become increasingly important as they are being held virtually during the pandemic, allowing students to continue gaining valuable clinical experience and getting feedback from faculty.
“Through simulation and AI, our students have the opportunity to see and experience a number of scenarios they might not otherwise come in contact with,” Kendrick said. “Most never realize how impactful and realistic simulation experiences can be. As we navigate the world of COVID, we find ourselves delving even further and faster into a wealth of opportunities we never thought possible, for example, telehealth.”
