SMU ALERT
Samuel Merritt University recognizes that personal safety within the campus community is of utmost importance, and has taken measures to provide for your safety in the event of an emergency. The SMU ALERT system delivers critical information to SMU community members on any communication device (phone, email, SMS text, pager, or fax).
When SMU ALERT?
SMU ALERT is designed for use only when an incident disrupts normal campus operations or threatens the immediate health and safety of the campus community. Some examples are fire, earthquake, hazardous materials emergency, bomb threat, utility outage, campus violence, medical emergency, or suspicious package.

Crisis Response
The University has a detailed crisis plan that is designed to provide resources, coordination, and information to responders, the campus community, and the community at large.
The plan takes an “all-hazards” approach, giving administrators the flexibility to address any major or minor incident that might impact the campus community.
The plan is an evolving document and is constantly reviewed and is currently in progress.

Individual Responsibility
Safety is everyone’s responsibility. The University strongly encourages faculty, staff, administrators, and students to maintain their own individual disaster kits for use in the event of a major emergency. The federal government has resources to guide you:
SMU Alert Enrollment
All students, faculty, and staff are automatically enrolled in the SMU ALERT system. New students are enrolled just after new student orientation. The system is initially populated with your SMU email address; you may provide additional contact numbers/addresses for voice, text, and email alerts. It is the responsibility of all students, faculty, and staff to keep their personal contact information up to date.
Personal contact information can be updated by students, faculty, and staff members directly by clicking the button below (SMU login required). Your personal information is protected under federal privacy laws and shall not be used for marketing or other solicitation activities.
