Newsletter #1, May 23, 2023: Discover the Impact of an MSW Degree at SMU

Ben-David Barr | Jun 21, 2023

Hello,

I’m thrilled to learn of your interest in Samuel Merritt University’s MSW Program!   As the MSW Department Chair, I’m excited about our program, and look forward to having a talented and diverse cohort.  My colleagues and I want to support you through your application process, and as part of that effort, we will be sending out a weekly newsletter that is designed to introduce you to the program and to provide tips and information to help you complete your application.

In our MSW program, you'll gain the knowledge and skills necessary to address critical social issues, such as substance abuse, depression, food insecurity, and access to healthcare. Our comprehensive curriculum combines theory and practical experience to prepare you for a rewarding career as a Health/Behavioral Health/Medical Social Worker.

To support you in preparing your application,  we offer Q&A sessions every Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. Come to these sessions to get your questions answered about the program and about the application process. We host webinars every other Saturday that provide a more in-depth discussion of the program curriculum and that also leave time to answer your questions. You can also sign up for an individual meeting with program faculty member who will review your application with you. Part of learning to become a helping professional is to also know when and how to reach out for your own support, and we encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities for assistance. The MSW department is here to support your journey.

Click here to read more about the program and get started on your journey towards making a positive impact in your life and in the lives of the community members you hope to serve.

I encourage you to watch this short video about how to start your application on the Social Work Common Application Service (CAS) website.

Warm regards,

Ben-David Barr, PhD, MSW
