About Me

I have been an RN since 1994. I started my career in gerontology and then transitioned to medical-surgical nursing. I continued to expand my nursing experience by working in telemetry and then finally specializing in critical care. During my time in ICU, I returned to school and completed a masters degree and a PHD. After receiving my PhD, I began teaching and since 2010 have been working full time at Samuel Merritt University.

Education

I received my undergraduate nursing degree (BSN) from Minnesota State University, Mankato Campus.  I received my master's of science degree (MS) from the University of California, San Francisco. My emphasis was on critical care/trauma and education. I received my doctorate in philosophy (PhD) from the University of California, San Francisco.

Scholarly Interests

My current program of research is in the area of symptom management, palliative/end-of-life care and bereavement care in the ICU. My main emphasis is working with ICU family members in improving end-of-life care and bereavement support.

Community Service

I have been an active volunteer at the RotaCare Northern Peninsula Free Medical Clinic since 2002. This clinic is located at the Mike Nevin Health Center in Daly City, CA. This clinic assists patients who do not have health insurance by providing them with basic primary care.
