Community involvement

Beyond his academic leadership at Samuel Merritt University, he is actively engaged in professional service, community outreach, scientific collaboration, and health professions workforce development. He maintains involvement with national organizations across biomedical science, medical and dental education, and health professions advising, while fostering partnerships that strengthen pathways to medical, dental, and other health professions programs. He has a longstanding commitment to mentorship, student success, and community engagement, including initiatives supporting clinical exposure, volunteerism, and service. His community involvement has included organizations and initiatives such as Feeding South Florida, Ronald McDonald House, and cancer awareness and fundraising efforts. Through this work, he brings together academic leadership, scientific expertise, strategic partnerships, and community service to expand opportunities for future healthcare professionals and strengthen the communities they serve.

He is actively affiliated with several national professional organizations spanning biomedical science, health professions education, and academic leadership. His professional memberships and engagement include the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), American Dental Education Association (ADEA), National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP), Genetics Society of America (GSA), and Entomological Society of America (ESA). He also maintains professional relationships with medical, dental, and health sciences institutions through academic partnerships, research collaborations, student pathway initiatives, and health professions workforce development. In his role as Dean of the College of Health Sciences at Samuel Merritt University, he works with academic and healthcare partners to expand educational opportunities, strengthen pathways into the health professions, and advance interdisciplinary and community-focused healthcare education. His broader community engagement has included participation with the Indian Association of South Florida and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, as well as service and outreach initiatives associated with Feeding South Florida, Ronald McDonald House, and cancer awareness and fundraising programs.

Selected scholarly highlights

His research has made significant contributions to genetics, genomics, behavioral genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and biomedical science, with more than 55 peer-reviewed publications and scholarship cited internationally. His pioneering work in honeybee behavioral genetics used quantitative genetics, gene mapping, and genomic approaches to advance understanding of the genetic architecture underlying complex behavior. This work received national recognition, including the David W. Fulker Award for outstanding research in behavioral genetics. His research subsequently expanded into biomedical and translational sciences, applying expertise in genomics, molecular genetics, and bioinformatics to interdisciplinary questions relevant to human health and disease. Beyond publications, his scholarly impact includes scientific collaboration, research mentorship, and integrating emerging genomic and bioinformatics approaches into graduate biomedical education. His work reflects a sustained commitment to advancing scientific discovery while translating research expertise into the education and development of future scientists and healthcare professionals.
