College of Podiatric Medicine (CPM) Summer Immersion Experience

The College of Podiatric Medicine Summer Immersion Experience is a one-week, in-person enrichment program designed for undergraduate and graduate students interested in podiatric medicine and surgery. Held annually in July at Samuel Merritt University’s Oakland campus, the program provides an immersive introduction to the profession through hands-on clinical skills training, academic exploration, and direct engagement with faculty, residents, and students.

This program is taught and supervised by senior faculty and resident physicians and offers a structured foundation in foot and ankle medicine while strengthening practical, clinical competencies.

Program Highlights

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Explore the profession of podiatric medicine and surgery
  • Shadow CPM faculty, residents, and current students in clinical and academic settings*
  • Learn about the Basic Sciences department and its partnership with CPM
  • Participate in hands-on clinical workshops, including suturing, cast making, and orthotic fabrication
  • Learn sports medicine taping techniques and foot and ankle biomechanics

  • Participate in an MCAT workshop
  • Learn about the admissions process, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities
  • Engage in career discussions with DPM physicians, residents, and medical students

*Shadowing experiences may be subject to change depending on clinical availability. Space is limited.
